Ahmad Hassan

Bahawalpur, Punjab

Ahmad Hassan is a traditional ceramic artisan from Multan, Punjab, Pakistan, belonging to a renowned family of craftsmen dedicated to preserving the centuries-old art of Multani Blue Pottery (Kashi work). He is the youngest son of the celebrated master craftsman Ustad Muhammad Alam, one of the most prominent figures associated with the revival and promotion of this heritage craft in Multan. Growing up in the environment of his father’s workshop and the Ustad Alam Institute of Blue Pottery, Ahmad Hassan learned the craft from an early age through direct apprenticeship. The institute itself was established to preserve and promote traditional blue pottery techniques and has trained hundreds of students over the decades. Ahmad Hassan’s work continues the traditional Multani Kashi technique, which involves molding clay forms, firing them in kilns, and decorating them with intricate hand-painted floral and geometric motifs using cobalt blue and other mineral pigments. This distinctive pottery tradition has historically been used in both decorative ceramics and architectural tiles seen in the shrines and monuments of Multan. As a younger generation artisan, Ahmad Hassan contributes to sustaining this endangered craft by combining inherited techniques with contemporary design sensibilities. Working alongside his family, he produces handcrafted pottery pieces such as vases, lamps, tiles, and decorative ceramics, helping keep Multan’s historic blue pottery tradition alive for new audiences and collectors.
